To truly experience the most beauty of Hangzhou, hiking on the mountains around the West Lake is highly recommended. Wandering through the nice pathways, breathing the fresh air, and listening to the whoosh of wind through leaf-shedding arbors. After the hiking, while tasting a glass of Longjing tea, all of a sudden, you will realize why Hangzhou is one of the most liveable cities in China.

West Lake is surrounded by the hills on its three sides – North, South and West with its east lakeside bordering Hangzhou city’s downtown area, hence the hill names of North Hill, South Hill and West Hill around West Lake. Among the numerous places to hike in the green and historical mountains around West Lake, the hike on Baoshi Shan is always the best way to enjoy the beauty of Hangzhou.

Route: Yellow Dragon Cave - bamboo path- The Sunrise Terrace - Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge Physical Rate: Low to medium
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers

We will pick you up in the morning, we started climbing at the foot of the hill by Yellow Dragon Cave all the way to the top to see the Baochu Pagoda.

Baochu Pagoda Standing on Baoshi (Precious Stone) Hill on the north bank of West Lake in Hangzhou, Baochu Pagoda was originally called Yingshang Pagoda and was constructed between 968 and 975 during the Northern Song Dynasty. Legend has it that after founding the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhao Kuangyin, the new emperor, called the king of Wuyue, Qian Hongchu, to the capital at Kaifeng. Qian Hongchu’s uncle, Wu Yanshuang, prayed for his safe return and had this pagoda constructed, naming it Baochu Pagoda-Tower of Blessing Chu.

It is situated on the Precious Hill. Originally, called Shimu Hill, or Baoshu Hill. The hill consists of rhyolite and tuff rocks which shine dazzlingly bright in the sun like real jaspers. Odd stones assemble on the hill, like Yiyuan Stone, Tunxia Stone,Fengxiang Stone, Luoxin Stone etc. Therefore, it is named as Precious Stone Hill. Especially, the Baoshu Pagoda and many purple rocks on the hill sparkle like diamond inlaid in the morning or evening sunlight. Hence, this scenic is named as "Precious Stone Hill Floating in Rosy Clouds".

Usually local people ofthen come here for leasure time or doing morning exercises.Climing the hill you will breath the fresh air and enjoy a while of quietness. You will be especially surprised when you get to the top of the hill, an excellent view of the West Lake will be in front of you like a beautiful Chinese water painting.

Ends the hiking nearby the Broken Bridge.

Below are some other popular hiking routes in Hangzhou.

Nine Creeks Meandering Through a Misty Forest to Longjing Village
Route: Jiuxi Scenic Area,Longjing Village
Physical Rate:low to medium
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers

Hangzhou's world-renowned Longjing green tea originates in small Longjing village, located just a little ways outside the city center. This is where the Nine Creeks Scenic Trail begins. The attraction offers you two different paths, both of which are a lot of fun. What will meet you first is a stretch of even and broad concrete road, which is flanked by pieces of verdant paddy fields and rows of farmhouses. When you walk further and further, a zigzag cobblestone path will welcome you. This section is the essence of the hiking route. You will see range upon range of mountains lining at the both sides of the path and a zigzag stream crossing and re-crossing the cobblestone path. You might as well take your shoes off and enjoy the fun of walking barefoot. At the end of the road you'll find the nondescript starting point of one of the most idyllic trails around the city.

This path is entirely flat, easy for children and anyone else who can put one foot in front of the other. Well-known yet somehow secluded, the trail skips across clear streams on conveniently placed stones. Side stairways lead to grandiose Buddhist monasteries. If you are tired, you can have a rest and find a table by the window in a teahouse to enjoy the beautiful view outside while you are having a cup of Lonjing Green Tea.

Lingyin Temple to Hupao Shan
Route: Lingyin Temple - Bei Gao Feng - Mei Ren Peak - Hupao Shan - Six Harmonies Pagoda
Physical Rate: Moderate
Distance: Approximately 12 kilometers

South of Bei Gao Feng lies one of the largest and most ornate Buddhist temples in China, the Temple of the Soul's Retreat, or Lingyin Temple (???).

You'll also find a direct path to Mei Ren Peak (Mei Ren Feng ???), and the start of the biggest and baddest portion of the trek.

This hike can take up an entire afternoon, so brace yourself to traverse low valleys and minor cliffs -- there are a number of difficult but rewarding ascents and descents -- that pass by temples, pagodas, bamboo forests and tiny villages in forest clearings.

There are a number of ways to reach Hupao Shan, but the most scenic is the bucolic Shi Li Lang Dang (????). Its winding stone paths are flanked by tea fields and modest trees, leading up to Five Clouds Hill (Wu Yun Shan ???).

From here, walk eastward across burbling streams and lonely pavilions, past Dahua Shan and the Six Harmonies Pagoda (Liuhe Ta ???) to the south. After climbing up Tiger Spring Mountain (Hupao Shan) you'll find good views and places to rest. The top of mountain reveals a hushed oasis amid a sea of trees, with West Lake looming in the distance.

Zhejiang University (Yuquan Campus) to Bei Gao Feng
Route: Zhejiang University's Yuquan Campus - Laohe Shan - North Peak
Physical Rate: low to medium
Distance: Approximately 4 kilometers

This well-trafficked path is neither long nor difficult, but the views are majestic. Start by entering Zhejiang University's Yuquan Campus at the east entrance. After giving a hearty salute to the Chairman Mao statue in the main commons area, make your way west to the very rear of the university, where you can ascend Laohe Shan (???). From here, head southwest toward North Peak (Bei Gao Feng). The stone path here is mostly level. The panoramic views of West Lake and the surrounding hill country are gorgeous.

Hupao Shan to Wu Shan Square
Route: Hupao Lu - Dachi Shan - Jade Emperor Hill - Eight Triagrams farming field - Phoenix Hill - Wu Shan
Physical Rate: Moderate
Distance: Approximately 5 kilometers

The final leg of your epic journey -- should you choose to attack all of the paths listed here at once -- winds its way from Hupao Shan back to the city center's Wu Shan Square (????).

Cross Hupao Lu, then walk up and over Dachi Shan (???) to Jade Emperor Hill (Yuhuang Shan ???). At Jade Emperor Hill you'll find ornate pavilions, temples, memorial halls and a view of Hangzhou's massive, Daoist, Eight Triagrams farming field (Bagua Tian ???).

Make your way along the well-posted trail toward Phoenix Hill (Fenghuang Shan ???), and finally north to Wu Shan itself. Its iconic Chenghuang Temple (Chenghuang Ge ???) looms over Wu Shan Square, where you can finally collapse at one of many quality restaurants nearby.
